Admission in government schools of Chandigarh starts today

The process for admissions to Classes 1 to 10 at the city’s 114 government schools has begun today (Monday). The Education Department issued the guidelines for admission after the declaration of results up to Class 8.

The city has eight government primary schools, 13 middle schools, 53 high schools and 40 senior secondary schools. In case applications are more than the number of seats, the schools may hold a draw of lots. A standard admission form will be used by all schools.

Parents can now enrol their child in the entry class in government schools as well. Admission will be given in accordance with the Right to Education (RTE) norms, the admissions will be done as per the neighbourhood concept (school within 5km from the residence).

According to the instructions issued by District Education Officer Nina Kalia, it is mandatory for the child to live around 1km away from the school for admission to primary class. If necessary, the distance can be increased to 3km.  For admission to upper primary class, the student’s home should be within 3km and can be extended up to 5km if needed.

For admission from Class 2 to 10, only students from the lower class will be promoted to the next class. If the student wants to transfer from one government school to another government school, then he/she has to write a letter to the Department of Education and get permission. If any new student wants to enrol in Class 9, then he/she will be admitted on the basis of merit and a written test.

Important points for admission:

  • 40 seats have been earmarked in one section from Class 1 to 5 and 45 seats in one section from Class 6 to 10.
  • Aadhaar card, housing certificate, birth certificate and passport size photo of the child will be required for admission.
  • Even if the child does not have a birth certificate, the school cannot refuse admission under RTE. Admission will be made on the basis of affidavit.
