A Wave of Sexual Violence Hits Chandigarh Region

In the Chandigarh area, there has been an alarming pattern of sexual assault allegations that left the community shocked and waiting for action.

One of the most terrible cases concerned a school bus driver aged 26 who got arrested after continuously raping a 17-year-old Class 12 student. According to reports, Mohammad Razaq used blackmail to coerce the girl into submission.

In another horrible case, a 35-year-old man from Mohali was arrested for sodomising an 8-year-old child. The victim’s parents alerted the police after discovering the assault.

A 23-year-old woman from Zirakpur has charged a man with rape and getting her pregnant on the promise of marriage. The victim claims that the accused has now discontinued all communication and is fleeing the police.

In another case, a guy raped his maternal cousin in Zirakpur. The victim’s spouse reported the crime to authorities.

In recent weeks, these few instances have revealed alarming trends. The prevalence of sexual assaults in the area raises grave concerns about the safety and welfare of children as well as women.

The community has however demanded for more stricter measures that will prevent similar crimes from happening by all means possible.

Local organizations and activists are pushing to raise awareness against sexual violence, providing education and training for law enforcement officials, and imposing tougher sanctions on offenders. They also emphasise the significance of offering victim and family support services.

As the area deals with these upsetting instances, officials must take urgent action to address the underlying causes of sexual assault and build a safer environment for everybody.
