Prohibitory orders clamped in Karnataka district after violence erupts

The Hijab row in Karnataka on Tuesday turned violent in parts of the state, forcing Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to close down schools and colleges for the next three days.

The development comes after violence in Shivamogga district forced the state administration to impose prohibitory orders.Considering the volatility of the situation, the district administration has issued curfew orders to stop mobs and students from stone-pelting. This comes videos showed hundreds of “protesters” turned up at ta college to hoist ‘Bhagva dhwaj’ (the saffron banner).

Shivamogga Superintendent of Police Lakshmiprasad stated that the violence started between two groups of students and they pelted stones at each other. Two students got hurt and the police are still looking for injured persons. The police are looking into how the stone pelting started, he said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai appealed for calm.“We’re awaiting directions from Karnataka HC,” he told the press on Tuesday afternoon. “I appeal to students to maintain peace & harmony. I’ve directed the school administration to see there’re no clashes between students. I appeal to all concerned persons from outside not to make provocative statements.”
