Ramanand Sagar’s epic Ramayan has started airing on TV again, a year after the drama saw a rerun during the coronavirus-triggered nation-wide lockdown. It was first telecast on Doordarshan in 1987-1988. The 1987 classic is currently airing on Star Bharat every day at 7pm.
Last year, Ramayan made a comeback on DD National after 33 years on public demand amid the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. The re-telecast had reportedly even beaten Games of Thrones finale in terms of viewership, notching up 7.7 crore viewers for one of the episodes.
From 1987 to 1988, Ramayan remained the most watched serial in the world. Till June 2003, it remained recorded in the Limca Book of Records as “the most watched mythological serial in the world”.
Actor Dipika Chikhlia Topiwala, who played Sita on the show, took to Instagram to inform her fans about its rerun. “So excited to share that ‘Ramayan’ will be airing on the small screens again this year! It aired during the lockdown last year, and looks like history is repeating itself.”
Dipika added, “The show has been a huge part of not just my life, but thousands of Indian families for years. Come be a part of our community and share the knowledge of the Ramayan with generations to come.”
Ramayan featured Arun Govil, Dipika Chikhlia and Sunil Lahri playing the roles of Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman, respectively.
This comes days after Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray imposed a strict ‘janta curfew’ from April 14. Whereas Delhi and Chandigarh have imposed weekend lockdown owing to the growing cases of Covid-19.
