Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, is planning to build an innovation hub centre on its land in Panipat where clothing companies will set up the offices.
This move will help PU earn revenue. PU will borrow funds from the central government to build the innovation hub and the proposal will be sent next month. Earlier, the Syndicate planned on selling this land.
In 1960, a person from Panipat had donated two commercial plots of 2,427 and 1,382 square meters to PU. These are situated in the Model Town area. PU was not able to utilise these plots and in December 2017, the Syndicate had passed a proposal to sell the land and use that amount to provide scholarship to students. Even though the proposal was passed by the Syndicate, no further action was taken. According to sources, buyers could not be found for this land.
A few days ago, PU administration formed a committee to take the final decision regarding this land. It was decided that the land would not be sold and as Panipat is known for textile industries, clothing companies would be established there. An innovation hub will be built and those companies would be given space to establish their offices. These companies will also train their staff from time to time. Rent will be charged every month from them and this amount will be spent in the development of PU. Moreover, students of PU will also be trained in this innovation hub.
PU has textile courses and this hub will serve as a boon for these students, who will be provided knowledge and job opportunities. Information about new fabric techniques will also be provided here.
