Petrol prices soar to the highest level in Chandigarh

Diesel and Petrol prices reached the highest point for the first time in Chandigarh, with petrol at ₹81.56 and diesel at ₹74.63 on Wednesday.

Last time when petrol price was the highest was on October 4, 2018, when price recorded was ₹80.94. At that time, it was believed that the rates would increase further, but the government cut the tax which reduced the price.

The rising prices have shaken the budget of the common man who is already facing troubles due to the lockdown.

In nine months, price of petrol has increased by ₹15

The hike price has been going on for the past several months. On April 30, recorded petrol price in Chandigarh was ₹65.82 per litre.

As the lockdown period was going on, the budget of UT and Central Government was also messed up. Hence, taxes were increased to meet the shortfall. 

First the central government increased the excise duty and then the Chandigarh administration increased VAT by about 5%. Petrol in Chandigarh was increased to ₹68.62 per litre while diesel was ₹62.02.

After this, the prices started increasing gradually. On July 31, 2020, the price of petrol in Chandigarh reached ₹77.41 and further increased to ₹78.97 per litre on August 31, 2020.

In Delhi too, prices rose sharply by 25 paisa per litre on Thursday, second consecutive day of similar rise. Petrol was sold at the new record high level of ₹84.70 (Thursday) compared to previous day’s ₹84.45 (Wednesday), while diesel prices increased to ₹74.88 per litre as against ₹74.64 a litre a day earlier.
