Twenty one-year-old Arya Rajendran, who successfully contested the recent civic polls, is likely to become the next Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, CPI(M).
A second year BSc Maths student, Arya Rajendran is the daughter of an electrician, whose entire family are supporters of the CPM. Arya is to be named by the party as head of the Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation, after the LDF won 51 of its 100 wards in the recent polls. The Thiruvanathapuram district secretariat of the Marxist party, recommended her name for the post at its meet here. The recommendation has to be ratified by the party state secretariat, which will be meeting in the city on Saturday.
If approved, Arya Rajendran, will become the youngest mayor ever in the country. The state secretariat will make the announcements on five of the total six corporations by Saturday, sources said.
Arya had won from the Mudavanmughal ward of the city corporation, bagging 2,872 votes, 549 more than the rival Congress candidate. The 21-year-old first became associated with the party when she joined its children’s collective Baalasangham as early as Class 5. Later, she became the district president and was state chief of the Baalasangham for the past two years. Due to her active role in the Baalasangham, she was taken into the Students’ Federation of India (CPM students’ wing) and was part of its state committee.
