First and second year students who were staying in hostels of Panjab University (PU) will have to pay rent from July. PU administration is not going to make any concessions. However, exceptions can be made for students facing financial crisis.
PU has 20 hostels which have the facility to accommodate more than 8,000 students. Due to the lockdown, many students had vacated the hostel, but some could not go to their homes. The number of these students was more than 200. PU administration had requested the students go home, but some did not leave as they wanted to appear in the examination.
When PU had directed the students staying in hostels to pay rent from July, the students had protested. But the matter did not progress further and the final year students were charged and the hostels were evacuated. Now the same rule will be applicable to students of first and second year and they too will have to pay ₹80 rupees per day, which will be applicable from July.
