The administration had recently submitted its action plan to the central government to control pollution.
The Union ministry road transport and highways had suggested initiatives to promote electric vehicles, like waiving of toll charges, parking charges and issuing green registration number plates. The government has already framed a National Electric Mobility Mission Plan, which aims at promoting hybrid and electric vehicles in the country.
A senior official of State Transport Authority (STA) said the UT is not registering petrol, diesel, CNG and LPG autos. It is only registering e-rickshaws with the STA, the official said.
At present, there are 6,000 autos registered with the STA. The STA renews registration of autos only after fitness inspection necessary after every two years. Every auto owner has to renew the vehicle’s permit after every five years at a cost of Rs 5,000. A sum of Rs 300 is the fitness inspection fee after every two years for the first eight years and then after every year for the next seven years. An auto can run on the roads in Chandigarh for a maximum period of 15 years.
According to the administration, a maximum of 6,000 autos registered with the STA can ply on Chandigarh roads. At present, nearly 3,000 autos are eligible for running in Chandigarh as others have not renewed their fitness inspection certificates and permits. A majority of them, who did not come for renewal of fitness inspection certificates and permits, were diesel-operated autos.
Recently, the Punjab and Haryana high court had directed the administration to frame a policy about auto-rickshaws in the city.
Meanwhile, the Chandigarh traffic police and STA has decided to jointly launch a drive against illegal autos plying in the city. The decision was taken in a joint meeting of the traffic police and STA officials.
UT take up issue with Punjab and Haryana.
The UT administration recently pushed for restricting the entry of diesel-operated vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, from Punjab and Haryana into the city.
The issue was raised during a high-level meeting of the Tricity coordination committee held under the chairmanship of Punjab governor and UT administrator V P Singh Badnore around two months back.
During the meeting, the administration suggested Punjab and Haryana to restrict the entry of diesel-operated vehicles, including autos, into the city. This was suggested to keep a check on pollution level in the city.
Autos bearing Haryana registration number are not allowed to enter Chandigarh for commercial and business purposes.
