Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe May Cancel India Visit Amid Protests Over Citizenship Act

New Delhi

India on Friday announced that the annual summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe, which was scheduled to be held in Guwahati, has been postponed.

“With reference to the proposed visit of Japanese PM @AbeShinzo to India, both sides have decided to defer the visit to a mutually convenient date in the near future,” Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

Guwahati, the planned venue for a three-day summit between Modi and Abe, has been engulfed in protests over the Citizenship (Amendment ) Act.

On Thursday, Bangladeshi Foreign Minister A K Abdul Momen and Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan cancelled their visits to India.

Momen cancelled his three-day visit to India beginning Thursday hours before his scheduled arrival, a day after he termed as “untrue” Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments on persecution of religious minorities in Bangladesh.

0Khan was scheduled to arrive in Shillong on Friday on a three-day trip, primarily to attend an event relating to Bangladesh’s freedom struggle, but he cancelled the visit due to widespread protests against the bill.
