47 doctors won Awards for their exemplary research work at PGIMER’s 8th Annual Research Day

PGIMER’s biggest ever research showcase 8th Annual Research Day witnessed 47 doctors winning awards for their exemplary and credible research work conducted here at PGIMER in the last three years.

Prof AK Gupta, Dean (Research) & Medical Superintendent, PGIMER, the pivot behind the entire show, expressed happiness as he stated, ’It is extremely gratifying to see such an overwhelming response to the 8th Annual research Day. In view of the quality of research conducted, it was a humungous task to judge the best 47 award winning entries. The awards given in the medical, surgical, pre/para clinical, innovation and Covid-19 categories were based on the H Index which measures both the productivity and citation impact of the publication.”

The Annual Research Day had the august presence of two eminent medical scientists of the country, Prof. Y.K. Chawla, former Director, PGIMER and Prof. Digambar Behera, former Dean (Research), PGIMER as Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively. “Research and Innovation is the only way forward to ensure affordable health care for all in our country where only 8% are having medical insurance and 39 million fall in BPL category,” Prof. Y.K.Chawla, Former Director PGIMER while addressing as the Chief Guest at an impressive function at Bhragava Auditorium here at PGIMER today.Endorsing the need for Frugal Innovations, Prof. Chawla underpinned, “Though the growth of the health sector in India has been tremendous and a lot of transition has occurred in health-care facilities, still the need of the hour is to focus on Low cost healthcare innovations designed for economic reasons doing more & better with less for more patients, lack in sophistication or complexity and makeup for affordability, without scrimping on safety or effectiveness.”Complimenting PGIMER for putting together the biggest ever research showcase, “These kind of initiatives go a long way in building an enabling environment for innovation and research by stimulating the young professionals.” Prof. Digambar Behera, former Dean (Research) PGIMER who graced the occasion as Guest of Honour stated “It is certainly important to be looking for cures to medical disorders, but it is equally important to conduct research on human health and well-being. Thus we need to celebrate and reward people for their research who cure diseases, expand our understanding of humanity, and work to improve people’s lives.”

Highlighting ‘collaborative efforts’ as the precursor for research, Prof. Behera emphasised the need for ‘extra mural funding, seamless procedures, think tank and mentorship, sharing of equipments and central facilities and inter departmental coordination to give an impetus to research in the country. Earlier setting the context, Prof. Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER said,” This year we have had a record of over 600 poster submissions from the faculty and residents of PGI.

The enthusiasm shown truly brings out the enormous research output of our institute. The past couple of years has seen a lot of us dive into COVID duties and battle the pandemic of our lives. But that hasn’t deterred meaningful research into this dreaded disease.

This is exemplified by the high impact research put up by the faculty in the special COVID section this year.”The event concluded with the award ceremony wherein 47 doctors were given away awards for their exemplary research work. The event was aptly wrapped by Prof. K. Gauba, Sub-Dean (Research) PGIMER by proposing a vote of thanks.
